All my life I wanted to build my own home. In 2016 I finally did it!!
The building company stressed that the house had to meet 5* energy ratings. Yet, when the build was finished, to be honest, I was left a little.....deflated.
Yes it was double brick construction, but apart from the south facing end (which is mostly glass) there was no use of insulation and what was used was paper thin.
The windows were single pane, extremely thin glass which leak air and water like a sieve despite the copious use of silicone.
And my garage, only single brick construction with a colorbond door 0.6mm thick. The result - a garage that was only useful for parking a car. The temperature either freezing or boiling. The environment a little damp!
After years of procrastination, I finally got around to insulating my garage door and installing ember seals to close the gaps on each side.
Did it make a difference?
An unbelieveable difference! The temperature is stable, very similar to the rest of the house. The seals cut down the draft and more importantly the build up of coastal dust, debris and more importantly to my wife, spiders and other creepies. We are a large family, my garage is space that we need to utilise and now it is with lots of storage areas, bikes, a workshop and a gym.
Since June 2025 I have been insulating garage doors for other people. The result and feedback from clients is always "wow, what a difference!"
